Foster the People - Torches

Foster the People’s debut album is a musical amalgam which mixes elements of pop, electro, indie and retro into one undistinguishable sound. Read on for triplew.me’s review of 'Torches'.

As soon as the first notes of ‘Helena Beat’ kick off – it becomes crystal clear what Foster the People are all about. This is the kind of lighthearted pop-oriented slightly psychedelic and utterly retro music that MGMT made popular a couple of year back.

Torches’ is essentially a medley of some infectious tunes which are tailor-made for the summer – but sadly, that is it. Most of these tracks are lukewarm and forgettable, in the long run. This is the kind of music that only sounds in context playing in the background of a Gossip Girl episode.

That being said, there are some saving graces on ‘Torches’. The super 90’s-pop sounding ‘Call It What You Want’ – is again, super catchy, but stands out on record with its gliding chorus and less electric sound. Another highlight is the glitchy-ballad ‘Miss You’ – which benefits from the contrast between the human breakdown and the hard-beats which surround it.

‘Torches’ isn’t that bad of an album, it could actually be considered mindless fun. The problem with it is that it doesn’t even try to hide its unoriginality, which is its downfall.

A diluted mixture of electronic sounds in a pop-oriented execution. Some of the tunes are fun and catchy but most are forgettable.
