Lenny Kravitz - Black and White America

Another veteran releases a new album – Lenny Kravitz is back with studio album number 9, and is full to the brim with funk and soul. This is one for the fans – read our review and if you’ve heard it, leave a comment...

Lenny Kravitz’s long-awaited album (that’s apparently been awaiting a release for around 8 months) is an exploration of funk and soul produced, and largely performed, by the man himself.

Kicking off with the title track, seemingly an ode to the progress that’s been made in racial relations in the USA, but pointing out there’s still a way to come, the track is a funky/soulful exploration of a difficult topic and sets an early tone.

Some highlights of a generally repetitive, but technically spot-on, album are Liquid Jesus, Rock Star City Life, Life Ain’t Ever Been Better and Superlove - all quite funky and carrying with them a lot of pop-funk, overlaid with some classic Kravitz riffs.

Kravitz also collaborates with Jay Z and DJ Military on Boongie Drop and Drake on Sunflower, both collaborations seemingly a little unnecessary, but likely to garner significant radio interest. In places the trademark Kravitz riffs are still there, but given a summery feel, as heard on the track Stand.

The album is a long one, coming in it at just over 66 minutes and 16-tracks, and does get a little repetitive in places. It is however a good exploration of a different side of Kravitz's song-writing and obvious interest in soul and funk; with much more emphasis on funk.

This record isn't going to set the world alight, but it is a decent effort from another stalwart of rock and will please many.

This is a decent record. It's not bad, and its certainly a bit of a change of direction for Kravitz. Full of funk, goodwill and love, this is clearly a personal project for Kravitz - as evidenced by its delayed release. It is a well made and produced effort, albeit it with some odd collaborations.
