The Kooks - Junk of the Heart

The third album from indie-rock/Britpop superstars The Kooks is titled Junk of The Heart. Read below for triplew.me’s review of the LP!

When The Kooks first appeared on the scene, back in 2006 with "Inside/Out" (and a string of worldwide hits) they managed to top the charts with their catchy tunes, but as that period saw a lot of similar-sounding bands achieve a level of success internationally, it was all became a bit undistinguishable.

Then, with the release of their sophomore album, the band tried taking a more ‘mature’ approach which manifested in a rockier sound.

Suffice to say, the album didn’t do as well as their debut.

Now – on their third release – The Kooks are returning to their ‘roots’ (if you want to call it that!). A jangly, poppy and cheerful collection of songs fit for a sunny day (pleasant sunny, that is).

The album opens with the title track - “Junk of the Heart (Happy)”. A great tune to start the record, complete with an enormously catchy chorus. The album continues down the same chipper route, a formula that always worked for The Kooks, but it does show hints of sound evolution here and there.

Rosie” – is an example of this. A 60’s-inspired groove makes the song a standout and the complete unaffected feel of the album enhances that sound.

Runaway” is another example of The Kooks staying true to their colours but avoiding repetition, creating a very cool song, with hints of a ‘trendy’ reggae vibe.

Junk of The Heart” is not a life-changing album – but it’s a record where The Kooks exhibit that they aren’t trying too hard to break out of an image but evolving at their own preferred pace.

An immensely listenable, but not overly special, album. This is a return to form for the British lads and finally seem comfortable in their own music.
