The Chemical Brothers have been at this game for some time now, so you could be forgiven for thinking they may be running out of steam.
This is not the case, as with their fifth studio effort ‘Further’ the British duo continues to defy the detractors and impress the punters with a seamless collection of eight absorbing tracks.
The sound is trademark Chemical Brothers - waves of luscious psychedelia colliding into a shoreline of dirty analogue synths, crunching beats and glistening soundscapes. There is some familiar territory here; ‘Horse Power’ shunts along menacingly not unlike a circa-2010 ‘Hey Boy Hey Girl’, the swirling ‘Dissolve’ evokes memories of ‘Setting Sun’ and ‘Let Forever Be’; whilst the epic sprawl of ‘Escape Velocity’ conjures up visions of a modern day ‘Private Psychedelic Reel’. But by the time the album crescendos brilliantly into the sonic euphoria of lead single ‘Swoon’, these familiar sounds have coalesced to an altogether spine-tingling new beast.
More than just a worthy addition to the Chemical Brothers catalogue, ‘Further’ surpasses expectations to be amongst the best of their recorded work to date. Based upon this evidence, the live installment should be eagerly awaited by salivating fans across the globe.
