The Drums - The Drums

The Drums self-titled offering is a mixed bag of influences and sounds under what seems to be a cohesive bundle of vintage tinged indie tunes.

On their signature single 'Let’s Go Surfing' the band sets out what they’re trying to be very clearly – a band that delivers 'pop love' songs that are catchy and sound like they would fit perfectly in a past era (50s/60s, or even a nostalgic 80’s).  In fact it's so nostalgic, that with every song on the album you probably feel like (finding and) taking Polaroid snaps, all while out on a picnic under the sunny June sky.  But with that same feeling of nostalgia, you’ll probably also feel that it gets a bit repetitive, which might be the major downfall of this collection of sweet melodies and lovelorn lyrics.

On this effort, The Drums have tried to recreate, but not define, the sound of more carefree and tender days through their songs, and they’ve succeeded with a couple of well-crafted tunes such as Forever and Ever Amen and the heavily Smiths influenced Best Friend. This is a good record to unwind to or for those boring long drives, but unfortunately it lacks that extra punch to keep us entirely hooked.

The album is not a brilliant must-have, but it's also not a dud and seems like it's perfect to accompany summer or a lazy afternoon.
