Omar Bashir - The Crazy Oud

The Bashir family needs no introduction when it comes to instrumental albums, with Omar's father, Munir Bashir, being one of the most famous Oud (the traditional Arabic instrument) players to ever play the instrument. Originally hailing from Iraq, Omar has developed a unique fusion style that fits perfectly as a soundtrack to a lazy Friday afternoon, or as an accompaniment to a casual get-together amongst friends.

The album is a great fusion of flamenco, rumba and classical Arabic music. Some blues and rock thrown in for good measure make this one of the more interesting listens that has come across the triplew.me desk this month. Thanks to My Master is a standout track, so too is the heartfelt Sorrow of a Child (To Iraqi Children). The fusion elements of the album are most prevalent on the last three tracks that provide a 20-minute long, three part flamenco piece where Bashir's Oud blends seamlessly with more classical flamenco guitar.

This is an album that either blends seamlessly into an Arabian background, or can sit proudly on its own - this is one of the best regional instrumental albums that we've heard for a long time.
