Alison Andrews - Love's a Cure

Alison Andrews debut album, Love’s a Cure, displays the singer/songwriter's vast range of influences and styles. Read below for triplew.me’s review of the album...

Deriving influences from guitar-driven 90’s alternative rock tunes, Alison Andrews launches into her debut album with “Emily’s in Trouble (Love’s a Cure)”. The album opener's catchy chorus recalls the staples of great alt-rock radio in the nineties, with perhaps Sheryl Crow the best example of a contemporary.

Andrews’ dynamic vocals continue to sail through the album’s 13 tracks. On “Lose Once” the addition of harmonica and background harmonies creates a luscious sound which helps give the album a cheerful ‘lift’.

In general, it’s safe to say that Andrews’ strengths (on “Love’s a Cure”) shine through the upbeat tracks as opposed to the ballads. That being said, the Americana/Folk flavors which are introduced in a couple of tracks (“Trip Me Up”) suit the singer/songwriter’s style well and play in her favor. The range in Allison’s vocals are a perfect fit for the country twang, and we’d definitely love to hear more of that.

Love’s a Cure is a decent debut in the way it introduces a very promising talent, and had it been a focused EP and a bit more cohesive in songwriting direction, it would’ve hit the mark completely.

Love's a Cure is a decent offeringf from the Dubai-based South African singer/songwriter. Bursting with toe-tapping alt rock tunes and mixed in with hints of country music - Andrews' talent is evident but overshadowed by the length of the record.
