Amadeus Awad - Time of the Equinox

There are a couple of things that can be said about this album; such as how it could probably be the best musical venture I've heard come out of the Middle East in years...and that’s a bold statement! Read below for triplew.me’s review of the “Time of the Equinox”…

Amadeus Awad’s “Time of the Equinox” is highlighted by many gems – from the choice in vocalists (with appearances from Mark Boals (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen) and Liz Vandall (ex-Sahara)) to the fantastic instrumentals.

It’s true that Awad can be criticized for being slightly repetitive and abruptly ending solos. That being said, “Time of the Equinox” was recorded as a concept album, this fact explains the recurring modes and related rhythms of each track. The album opens with an atmospheric intro that ebbs into a classical piano air and ends with a concise guitar solo which stretches over the album's general sound.

What truly impressed us were the techniques incorporated into this album, especially on the track “Time of the Equinox”. Although one could argue that Awad's strengths lay in his ability of sweep picking and arpeggios, it was nevertheless refreshing to hear something entirely different than the 3-note chord that most Middle Eastern bands attempt to disguise as “new and original material.” This album resounds with Neoclassical and Progressive influences (particularly while focusing on the drum breaks). Most tracks contain a vibe that only listening to Satriani could explain and yet, it is done with an effect that seems personal to the artist himself.

As with concept albums, these tracks cannot be appreciated if played on ‘shuffle’. This record is meant to be enjoyed as a whole. And in this sense, “Time of the Equinox” can truly be appreciated as the work of art as it is – imperfections and all.

An impressive conceptual album from multi-talented Lebanese musician Amadeus Awad. The album takes the listener on a journey influenced by many sounds and atmospheres. One of the best recent Middle East releases!
