Best Coast - Best Coast

The first full length record from the indie pop duo Best Coast delivers coy sunshine and luscious hooks in a little less than forty minutes. So much so they made it on triplew.me's Summer Playlist.

This could’ve easily been another surf-pop influenced record, but it avoids being just that – as it is both earnest and interesting. What makes these songs tick, is the fact that they sound authentically fresh – no one is trying hard here – thanks to the simplistic approach taken by Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno in crafting their tunes.

It’s not groundbreaking by any means, but it’s seemingly wholesome – the flow is impeccable as there’s not one song which is out of place. There is yearning for romance and melancholy delivered perfectly through the resonance of Bethany’s distinct, yet relaxed singing style – this isn’t to insinuate that there isn’t any fun to be found between the lines.

The great thing about Crazy for You is that even though one can identify the influences, from the lo-fi sound of tracks like Summer Mood to the  punk-tinged Bratty B and the 60’s pop inclined title track Crazy for You, they are never scattered – they are all intelligently combined to create a harmonious mood invoking a more pleasant (and catchy) nostalgia.

A nostalgia album without the nostalgia, Best Coast delivers a wonderful soundtrack to summer (so much so it was part of triplew.me's summer playlist) and doesn't rely on cheesy references to the past to deliver a convincing album. Great stuff and surely the under 45 definition of easy listening.
