!!! (chk chk chk) - Strange Weather Isn't It

Opening with the insanely catchy (and sublime) 'AM/FM', it’s clear that !!! (say it Chk Chk Chk) are not looking to recreate their niche sound, nor make any big changes to their dance-funk-punk aesthetic on their latest offering, Strange Weather, Isn't It?

What they are doing, however, is looking to go deeper down into their sound to find themselves funkier, edgier and bigger with their fourth offering, which also marks the group’s tenth year since the release of their self-titled debut LP.

Mixing and matching sounds of intense bass, lively saxophone and ferocious percussion, the songs on Strange Weather, Isn’t It? will drop you into a subconscious haze of head-bopping and improvised dance moves, and even if they the shapes you involuntarily cut are a little lackluster, it won’t matter – as vocalist Nic Offer tells us on 'Steady as the Sidewalk Cracks' to "not ever look back/you’ve got to trust the music".

And you almost have to trust this one, because really there isn’t any other choice with so many of these hooks seeping into your sub-consciousness – even with seemingly more innocent and less complex tracks such as 'Hollow', you'll be entranced and hypnotized, thanks to the ingenious writing and layering of the songs.

Just as the record seems to take a darker turn on 'Jump Back' it bounces back (no pun intended!) to the dance-floor with the closing tracks. !!! have delivered a near perfect record which only sounds better, and reveals itself more, on repeat listens.

This album's probably a 3.5, but we just discovered our voting system doesn't allow for 1/2 marks. Not sure whether that's a statement to do better and not waste our server's time on half marks, or whether that was a conscious choice. Also conscious that we've written three lines without anything about the album. It's good. Enjoy it.
