Review of Chromeo - Business Casual

The Montreal electro-funk duo is back with another dose of dance-floor anthems and pulsating tracks – and they’re fully enamored in the retro glitz.

Business Casual sounds more passé than its predecessor Fancy Footwork (2007), but what works so well for Dave 1/P-Thugg is that even when they could essentially be a “novelty” act, or border on cheesy – heck, some of what they do is cheesy – they obviously take their sound seriously while having a massive sense of humor about it (not to mention the talent it takes to pull it off).

Having said that, this isn’t their brightest release – it could’ve used a little less retro and little more flair in some parts.

The good thing is, when they turn the charm on, it’s on – case in point the opener 'Hot Mess'; which seemingly sounds sparse with synth injections and spoken verses only to build up to the “solo” and a menacing drums breakdown – unfortunately after a couple of classic Chromeo moments ('I'm Not Contagious', 'Night by Night') the sound seems to take an over-inflated trip down memory lane ('Don’t Walk Away', 'The Right Type') which all add up to signify the “buzzkill” stage of what could’ve been a far more entertaining affair.

We might've expected more from the guys following their last outing. It's an OK album, but too much filler to make it a must have in the collection.
