Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest review

Following the fantastic 2008 Microcastle must’ve been a daunting notion to the the four-piece (with an ever changing lineup) band from Atlanta.

Their “forte” is experimental indie rock with ambient pop sensibilities – and that’s something you can definitely hear on this, their fourth record, but you can’t particularly 'taste' it. Instead, we're presented with a collection of somewhat muffled tunes with hints of past works – and album which isn’t trying to follow, but to just be. It flows so well, so smooth that it could easily melt into the background without teetering on dull, thanks to random bursts of brilliance throughout the eleven tracks.

On 'Revival', the first single, there's a warm familiar feeling of a vintage pop hooks which then seeps through to 'Memory Boy', but on a different, more Beatles-esque wavelength.

Some of these songs are too long while some are brief; there isn’t a pattern here which makes it all a bit schizophrenic – but it’s a rather dreamy mess (a bit of Atlas Sound – lead singer/guitarist Bradford Cox’s side project - can probably be heard on this record). Halcyon Digest sounds like it had a lot of influences and ideas, but they all work so well into executing an exquisitely-made record.

Melodic quirky-indie-pop rounds out this week's substantial amount of content from the genre. Some well constructed songs round out a collection that Rasha calls 'rather dreamy mess' - in a good way of course!
