Tim Hassall - Oh Restless Heart review

Read our review of Dubai-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tim Hassall's latest album, Oh Restless Heart, a collection that's as diverse as the musicians that played on it and even more listenable.

Hassall's been honing his talent around Dubai for a considerable amount of time now, playing both solo and with Tim Hassall & The August Company, his live band. His storytelling and songwriting ability shines through on this considered selection of songs that features a massive array of artists from around the world, including tracking in LA and Nashville.

One thing that jumps 'off the speakers' is the attention to detail on the production. Co-produced between Hassall and Joshua F Williams (who has worked with Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen) and recorded largely in Dubai, it really is a stand-out of the album, adding both a sincere edge and well-rounded professionalism to the package.

Hassall's music is hard to define - nestling comfortably between alt-country, folk and soul (among many other things). Observational in nature, the songs speak an almost 'fresh' worldliness that isn't weary, but is longing. The opening track Texas Sunset is a perfect example of this. The first single Marilyn Munroe bops and jangles along seemingly 'out' of the speaker. Homeland of the Heart (with some great instrumentation) and Price to be Paid are both odes to growing up in Dubai, tracks that are indicting and revealing as they are sentimental.

Other highlights such as I Know A Girl, Bribing the Reaper and Old Friends all typify the album's strengths and deliver Hassall's influences well.

This is a well-rounded effort, with the production and instrumentation complemented well by Hassall's ability as a songwriter and story-telling lyricist. Seeing the album live could be a highlight of the winter and will be worthwhile checking out.

This is an album that surprises when it shouldn't, twists and turns, but ultimately feels like a comfortable pair of jeans. Tim's been playing around the Middle East for a while now and those who have caught him know what to expect, and those who haven't are in a for a treat.

The production on this album, coupled with some great songwriting that introduces a seemingly new, and largely intangible, element to the songs, is really great to hear. Get yourself a copy and enjoy it today.
