Review: Black Milk - Album Of The Year

triplew.me reviews the recent album from Detroit rapper and producer Black Milk, the rather pompously titled 'Album of the Year' - review by Rasha Omer.

An album with that title might come off as pompous or hilarious depending on how you look at it – it might even put some people off – but it shouldn’t.

Album of the Year is a fulfilled, brilliantly produced hip hop album from Detroit rapper and producer Black Milk.

This guy has often been compared to the late J. Dilla – which is a feat on its own, but one shouldn’t mistake Black Milk’s work to be the poor man’s J. Dilla, this is an entirely refreshing release from a highly talented MC – his flow is impeccable and his rhymes are on point.

The sound on Album of the Year is accessible yet appropriately experimental – with live instrumentation plugged in whenever possible ('Oh Girl', 'Distortion') without ditching the regular loop cuts; this creates a unique atmosphere feeding off the contrast of a tougher exterior represented by the lyrical content and delivery and the more smooth sound.

Unlike many hip hop offerings, this record isn’t overflowing with collaborations, don't get us wrong, there are some - and that works perfectly in adding different dimensions (vocally) without making this a heavy-handed affair – such as in the MC duel on the single 'Deadly Medley' or on 'Over Again' featuring female vocals. It might not be the Album of the Year, but it’s a near perfect record nonetheless.

Black Milk has produced a standout rap and hip hop album for 2010 with 'Album of the Year' - although potentially not living up to its title, still has a lot to offer and is definitely worth a listen. Get into it now.
