Review of Twin Shadow - Forget

triplew.me reviews the new album from Twin Shadow, 'Forget' finding it to be a stand-out debut release from the Brooklyn-based lad - review by Rasha Omer.

In a year marked by a slew of bedroom bands and an abundance of “down memory lane” musical trips, this debut album (aptly titled Forget) from Brooklyn based George Lewis Jr. could’ve gone easily unnoticed – but it really couldn’t, because it truly does stand out.

Ticking all the right boxes; melancholic, rich, eerie, dark, poetic, dramatic and occasionally dance-y; the sum of all the elements adds up to a spectacular tracklisting of beautiful, hummable songs which will definitely evoke a myriad of emotions in any listener. Ranging from a brand of joyful despair (think post-punk characteristics) echoed by such powerful delivery from the singer (evident on the opening track “Tyrant Destroyed” and “Slow”) to intricate introspection in light of the lyrical content.

The sound is a perfect balance of not trying too hard vintage and interestingly complex – amply supported by a type of epically sounding arrangements and smart production.

The atmosphere is misleading, one almost believes we're supposed to feel desolate at some point, but thankfully that isn’t the case. The balance on the album is remarkable, even at the saddest point it is catchy enough to distract from the regular doom and gloom (“I Can’t Wait”, “Tether Beat”)- making Forget a hauntingly impressive debut album.
