triplew.me album review of Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz

In the follow up to his immensely popular (And critically acclaimed) release Illinois – it seems that Sufjan Stevens is taking a less calculated conceptual role and just fully embracing the beauty of zany, untidy music.

Age of Adz isn’t simple by any means; it’s a slightly chaotic yet epic rollercoaster ride – but for a Sufjan Stevens release, it is as straight forward as it can get!

Most of the songs would sound gorgeous in a minimal acoustic setting, but here they are really three dimensional – with ethereal electronic elements, haunting harmonies and lushly layered instrumentation. Opener “Futile Devices” is one of the less complicated songs, thus appropriately starting off this record - but still sets the stage for Age of Adz to create a colorful bizarre dream-like effect.

Some of the tracks are heavily laden with unnecessary texture, which takes the effect down a notch or two (“Bad Communication”) – in contrast, we find that some of this texture works really well on other tracks (“Too Much”, “Age of Adz” ).

Stevens’ expressive vocals play a leading role in creating the unearthly atmosphere and it’s clear that this is his most personal release yet – which puts a fantastically refreshing twist on his technically impressive music.

This is a good effort from Stevens - a great follow up and places his sound even further at the forefront of his genre. A great listen and definitely worth a spin if you can get your hands on it!
