Belle & Sebastian - Write About Love

Offering more of the same sweet, twee indie pop they’ve always been inclined to do – the Glasgow-based, 7-piece, critically acclaimed band are staying awfully true to their musical essence on their seventh release, Write About Love.

Enlisting producer Tony Hoffer (who produced their last album The Life Pursuit), collaborating with Nora Jones on “Little Lou, Ugly Jack, Prophet Jack” and actress Carey Mulligan on the lead single and track title is all good and well, but this record doesn’t witness any real variation beyond that – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

This record is a solid effort, fitting well with the Belle and Sebastian 'sound', and is a natural progression against their past work; so it all works well whether this is your first time listening to the band or if you're a diehard fan because the songs are all well just plain well done. The quality is consistent throughout – which is something to admire about Write about Love.

Some of the shining moments include the catchy opener “I Didn’t See It Coming”, and the dynamic “I’m Not Living in the Real World” – but having said that, even though the record is lovely, for the best part it can get a bit ho-hum and doesn’t really pack enough punch to stand out from the pack.

This isn't a groundbreaking album by the Glaswegians, but it is perfect in the way of Belle and Sebastian. Fans will love this, those who don't may be better off starting at earlier albums, or even The Life Pursuit (the last album).
