Maximum Balloon - Maximum Balloon

Influenced by the music he listened to during long commutes in Los Angeles (he's a native New Yorker), David Sitek’s (he of TV on the Radio fame) side project is a mixed bag of influences – but for the most part, it sounds glitzy, polished and poppy.

The collaboration list reads who’s who of the indie rock world (Little Dragon, Karen O and David Byrne to name a few), most of whom Sitek’s has already produced music for. Maximum Balloon opens with “Groove Me”, a really cool and slick upbeat 80’s tinged track.  This retro sound is evident throughout the record, and it comes as no surprise as Sitek has been listening to Prince, Cyndi Lauper and Chic during the making of the album.

It’s also a good thing as the record doesn’t sound like TV on the Radio Lite, this is obviously fun party music – yet really nicely produced. Maximum Balloon does have its dull moments which happen when the tempo goes down a gear; the slower or more vulnerable songs – such as “The Lesson” and the closing track “Pink Bricks” - do not necessarily work in the context found here, and it’s a shame, because without the indulgence found in the aforementioned tracks this could’ve been a more well rounded effort.

A great party-type album from one of the most creative men in music today - David Sitek from TV On The Radio. It's not trail-blazingly good, but it's pretty darn good. Get into it.
