The San Francisco band had their debut album (simply titled Album) steal the limelight last year, ending up on many end of the year lists and being praised by critics and music fans alike – so naturally the expectations are high for their next record, and if we are to judge by their newly released EP, it’s going to be a significantly different affair from their first one.

The sound is much larger; as they have used a variety of instruments in a bigger production (they've only picked six out of about 70 recorded songs) – it is ambitious and interesting but not revolutionary by any means.

The EP starts out with “Thee Oh So Protective One” a sweet vintage inspired tune with lots of trumpet – a nice kick off and a strong indication that the band wants to try something new. “Heartbreaker” is similar in style to the low-maintenance approach which signified their debut album – but on the rest of the tracks they find a good balance between the past and the present; the bigger nicely produced vibe and the charming lo-fi style.

The subject matter does not change much from their previous release, from a string of introspective to lovelorn lyrics – making it an intensely personal experience regardless of the colorful backdrop.

Critically acclaimed, Girls have been prolifically writing and recording a substantial catalogue of tunes to follow up 'Album'. And while this short collection is an accomplished set of songs perhaps more time spent on crafting the tunes would propel this beyond 4 stars. Don't get us wrong, it's good. Very good. But one almost gets the feeling it's a release for release's sake. Looking forward to a long-player in the new year.
