Nick Cave and the members of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, who are sometimes known as Grinderman, are back with their sophomore release for more of their brash rock ‘n roll and raggedy blues. The music is ferocious and in your face from start to finish – and that makes for one exhilarating experience.

Opener “Mickey Mouse and Goodbye Man” starts out the record in an excellent dramatic and rocky fashion –  an attitude which extends to more tracks on Grinderman 2 such as on “Evil” and “Wolf Tamer”. The rest of the album changes pace between a pure dirty blues sound (“Kitchenette”) which Grinderman does quite well to a more experimental kind of rock which is both fuzzy and heartfelt (“When My Baby Comes”).

Regardless of the contrast in tempo (from blues to stoner rock to psychedelic rock) throughout the album, Cave’s voice and howling delivery tie it all together nicely in a dark, moody, unpolished yet somewhat contagiously entertaining package – and regardless of past affiliations, Grinderman 2, as a stand-alone release pretty much rocks it out of the park.

Amazing. Aussie band Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, already a prolific contributor to the music world, re-hashed slightly the line up for a dirty blues filled jaunt on the last Grinderman album. With co-conspirator Warren Ellis (not the artist) clearly pushing the man to other things, this second record is more of the same, but somehow more refined, harder and just, well, better. A top album and one worthy of a December spin. It's hard to stay on top for over 25 years. Nick Cave & Co have. At no artistic cost.
