The Black Eyed Peas - The Beginning

The L.A. hip hop group returns with their 6th LP, and apparent sequel to their majorly successful release from 2009, The E.N.D. - and it seems that will.i.am and co aren’t making any changes to the sound they’ve been perfecting for a while, a sound heavily influenced by the modern-day clubbing culture.

The songs are doused in synths, heavy electro slash hip hop beats and auto-tuned to an inch of their existence. The lyrical content of each song basically consists of a couple of lines repeated over and over again, which can get a little grating after some time. It’s also noticeable that Fergie, the group’s main vocalist, is almost absent on half of these tracks which actually works against them.

The album opener and single “The Time (Dirty Bit)” borrows heavily from an 80’s song, which belongs to the Dirty Dancing soundtrack – and the following tracks flow in a similar fashion of an upbeat, throbbing bass-centric sound, even on the slower numbers (such as on “Love You Long Time”) .

However, the second part of the record has better moments of the usual BEP sound (less club, more pop), and that definitely suits them better (such as anthemic “Someday”) – Unfortunately these moments are overshadowed by the incessant need to create a strict dance/electro record.

The same auto-tuned, electro-like fare but with less pop and more dance/club tendencies makes this a less enjoyable record than its predecessor.
