Pendulum - Immersion

The divisive electronic outfit upset the drum n' bass purists even further with this genre-smashing effort.

With their third long player 'Immersion', Pendulum continue on their mission to infuse their trademark high octane drum n' bass sound with... well, just about anything they can get their hands on.

Subtlety is left at the door as the Australian-British six piece create a racket which takes in elements of straight up drum n' bass, electro, heavy rock and progressive house.

Surprisingly, it is the latter of these stylistic approaches which shines through brightest thanks to the well-crafted 'The Island' (Part I: Dawn & Part II: Dusk), which shifts menacingly from lighter to significantly darker shades as suggested by the title. Elsewhere contributions from guest artists vary from the predictable; such as The Prodigy's Liam Howlett on 'Immunize', to the bizarre; namely 'Self Vs Self', a convincing yet oddly placed stab at metal with respected Swedish act In Flames.

'Immersion' sets the loftiest of ambitions, but ultimately ends up sounding more like overblown electro-pomp. Still, it's good fun nonetheless and after over a million album sales Pendulum must be doing something right... aren't they?

Pendulum have a massive reputation and often deliver outstanding albums and live performances, and this one unfortunately falls a little short of the mark. As Calvin says though, they must be doing something right...
