Adele - 21

The young London-based singer/songwriter releases her sophomore album – heavily influenced by her personal life and most recent relationship dwindling, which sparked most of the songwriting on 21.

Adele gained fame during the soul/jazz revival movement led by the likes of Amy Winehouse and Duffy – the songstress cemented her position as a critics’ darling with her first offering 19, which won her several awards and proved her to be a popular act.

The album opens with the epic-bluesy-sounding single “Rolling in the Deep” in which Adele showcases her soaring vocals – a perfect opener for the record, with its infectious choir background vocals. The record’s tempo goes up and down but in perfect synchronization thanks to the top-notch and sleek production. The theme is pretty much uniform throughout 21, with tales of heartbreak – but she manages to pull it all off in such a mature and sophisticated manner.

Most of the tracks on 21 are tailored to shine a light on Adele’s impressive vocals – which work best with more minimalistic approaches such as on the piano-driven ballads “Take It All”, the gorgeous “Someone Like You” and the acoustic ditty “If It Hadn’t Been for Love”.

21 doesn’t offer anything new or revolutionary – just well-made songs of love and loss brought to life by a very emotive Adele. And that is just fine, ‘cause well-made beautiful songs can go a long way.

A wonderfully produced and written album from soulful songstress Adele. Songs of heartbreak and lost love compliment her impressive vocal range within the polished arrangements of both the simple and more complicated pieces.
