Cut Copy - Zonoscope

Electronica can be a very tricky genre as much as it can be flexible and accommodating. A flood of synthesizers and beats looping can end in disaster at the wrong hands – or worse, a case of diluted electronic with pop or hip hop elements can produce heinous results. And that’s exactly why - a solid, interesting, catchy and vibrant Electronica record can be such a wonderful thing.

Electronica group, Cut Copy, hailing from Melbourne – have been producing fine synthpop and electro tunes since their first release back in 2004. And on their third release, Zonoscope, the quality doesn’t drop. It’s a slightly different sound, with noticeable ‘tropical’ tendencies – which in comparison makes the record sound a lot warmer and brighter that its predecessor (2008’s “In Ghost Colours”).

That change is noticed right off the bat with opener “Need You Now” – A half dance anthem half tender electro-ballad which sets the stage for some brilliantly appealing back-and-forth change in tempos. The 80’s impact is also very prominent on Zonoscope, which at rare (thankfully!) moments makes the sound a tad redundant (a la “Corner of The Sky”).

That being said, the group has set the standard really high with their previous releases. But with this set of tracks which range from party anthems to vulnerable, intimate, thought-provoking and serene electronica – which they still manage to somehow make sound coherent, they’ve definitely produced another excellent addition to their discography.

Another well-made album from Australian synthpop group, Cut Copy. Songs ranging in moods and tempos from 80's-style dance to more thoughtful electro - this makes for an interesting and entertaining album to listen during the day or during the party.
