OK Go return with a follow up to 2005's Oh No with a richer, more defined sound – and not a treadmill in sight.
Hitting the studio with famed indie producer Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, Clap You Hands Say Yeah!) for their 3rd studio album, OK Go have found themselves a more textured and layered sound than the "on the speaker" sound that drummer Dan Kanopka told triplew.me defined OK Go's earlier albums. One listen to the tracks This Too Shall Pass, White Knuckles, End Love, Back From Kathmandu defines this more considered approach to the recording process that has captured OK Go at their most complete to date.
As Kanopka tells triplew.me, “After the years of touring on Oh No, we took about 6 months off to decompress. When the writing process kicked back in we allowed to roll-out our song writing differently than before...we did most of the song structure writing while we were in the studio". It seems at the same time, Damian Kulash’s lyrics and delivery has changed as well, often offering insights to the pressures of touring and navigating through the music business in a much more considered and soulful way, rounding out the sound perfectly.
OK Go fans who joined the ride after Here It Goes Again and THOSE treadmills might not find this album as accessible as Oh No, but it has some beautiful moments and as a complete album works very well. Last Leaf and Skyscrapers are excellent examples of a softer side of the band, while Back From Kathmandu is a Beatles-esque tune that could sit happily on Sgt Peppers.
From the first single WTF? to the follow up This Too Shall Pass and End Love it is an album that reflects a band comfortable with who they are, the direction they’re going and importantly, the music they’re making.
