Punk-rock veterans, Green Day, are back with a new retrospective live album and DVD combo of recent tours, with a bonus new live s. It’s a bit of trip down memory lane, but not much more.
Like many my age, Green Day represented modernpunk-rock-pop (genre = invented) in the early to mid 90’s. Consistently altering their sound to match a changing audience, and more recently embracing concept albums, Green Day’s sound has changed considerably over the years.
The live album is a greatest hits package – combined with a 18 track live DVD, it’s for the Green Day fans. The 17-track live audio CD has a similar package of tunes that will please Green Day fans no end.
The footage shows a band that after nearly 25 years together, and with band members nearing or at 40 years of age, still has the energy, material and drive to pull off a great performance.
The new track Cigarettes and Valentines is typical of the bands more recent tracks and no doubt will get a lot of radio coverage.
If you’re not a fan – perhaps go back in time and discover some of their albums before investing in this though. There’s some gems on those records (Dookie, Nimrod, Kerplunk) that will be hard to discover after listening to what is essentially an anthology.
