Bright Eyes - The People's Keys

Conor Oberst is a big name on the American indie rock scene – so big he had the term ‘emo’ redefined around him and his music. Conor Oberst is (better known as Bright Eyes - as n outfit/band) the founder of Nebraska-based Saddle Creek records, which was home to many indie rock band back in the late 90’s/early 2000’s (a la Two Gallants, Rilo Kiley and Cursive).

Bright Eyes’ seventh studio album signifies an organic shift in their stylistic direction – it’s still very raw and vulnerable – but trippy-er, lighter and catchier. The record opens with “Firewall” – a pretty introspective, dark track – a good indicator of the mood of the album; subtle electronic bits, atmospheric vibes and a depressing catchiness.

“Shell Games” is a tender piano-driven anthem which at some point ascends into some kind of an 80’s-futuristic arena rock ballad! The trend continues, as you will think that you know what to expect – but this a very different Bright Eyes album – poppy “Jejune Stars” is another example of this lighter musical approach.

It’s refreshing to see (listen) to this side of Bright Eyes – it’s still a sort of a concept album, and it’s not the happiest record on earth – but the layering of electronic elements gives a revolving, encompassing feeling of levitation – and that atmosphere is what makes this a memorable Bright Eyes’ record.

A solid release from Bright Eyes which plays on some layered electronic elements giving it an atmospheric dimension while still retaining the personality of Bright Eyes music.
