Malika - Sand Star

The sophomore release from Dubai-based pianist Malika Omar is a mixed bag of influences and styles ranging from a very specific oriental style to a more ethereal sound, read below for triplew.me’s review of Sand Star.

The talented South African pianist proves her versatility on keys on each one of the album’s eight tracks. Opener and title track “Sand Star” has a very distinct Arabian flavor accompanied by the addition of Oud – the piece starts out with a very melancholic vibe but then builds up with an intense use of percussion which adds an interesting twist. “Fuji Blossom” is a very beautiful and serene piece – eventhough it isn’t as shows-topping as the first track, its beauty lies within its simple composition. This less show-y style carries on into the next track “Peacock Blues” – which stands out for its bittersweet sense of mystery – Malika’s skill is definitely a highlight on this piece.

What’s most interesting about all of the pieces on Sand Star is that none of them are one dimensional – you might think a track is going a certain direction but it will definitely take you by surprise! In addition to that, the range of influences is so extensive that you will be taken on a musical journey around the world (there is even a Latin taste with “Tango with Alejandro”)

Sand Star is a well composed, beautifully executed album from a very skilled and versatile pianist with music styles that will definitely appeal to a wide set of tastes.
