After years of recording and playing live gigs (opening for a couple of high-profile acts), UAE-based Juliana Down have released their new album “Empires” – read below for triplew.me’s review…
Blending elements of anthemic arena rock, pop rock, a pinch of 80’s flair and a whole lot of attitude – the album kicks off with 'Control' – which sets the stage perfectly with its massive sound – a hybrid of Coldplay and Foo Fighters if you may. The next song – the current single and title track 'Empires' – is significantly darker, and packs a whole lot of dance-y ‘rock’ with a fiery chorus and ferocious drumming.
The album has its share of scorching rock anthems, but on the other side it does pack some less hard-edged moments with a couple of slower songs or ballads – a la the Killers-esque 'Without You'. A significant change in tempo is what you’ll notice first – but beyond that, the song balances a very interesting structure; going back and forth between being a piano ballad with some pop-rock undertones to a fully fledged louder, scream-at-your-lungs track which ends with a cool guitar solo, followed by a lovely piano outro – making it a definite standout.
The rest of the album is split between harder, edgier and rockier songs ('Rush' and the multi-layered 'Freaks & Wonders'), the more epic sounding rock ballads (such as the aptly titled 'Glorious') and the utmost tender moment on 'Empires' comes right at the end with the closing track 'Never Coming Home' – an unexpected simple piano-led track.
