Cults - Cults

The debut album from California-based indie pop band Cults is a collection of youthful 60s pop inspired songs which at first listen, might sound a little bit plain – but have yourself a second listen and read triplew.me’s review of Cults below…

The self-titled release of California duo is very similar in aesthetic to a slew of records which came out last year under the retro trend umbrella (50s/60s pop to be particular – such as South Carolina). But with that said, there is something distinctive about the sound of this particular record. The duo possesses a really cool dynamic between them, which helps create a fantastic harmony in the tracks.

Opener ‘Abducted’ is an addictive perfect indie-pop tune which starts out in a calm fashion before breaking out (without warning!) into a full-on blissfully catchy track. ‘Go Outside’ is a dreamy, sing-a-long type of track (which sounds less 60’s and more Jackson 5). Another highlight is ‘Oh My God’ which has some of those same sunny, youthful elements as Go Outside.

The debut album from Cults, might sound unoriginal at first – but that is alright - because even when no grounds were broken in the making of this album, the due succeed in making a lush sounding, seamless final ‘product’ (thanks to the addition of a backup band which has definitely kicked up their sounds a notch or two). At the end of the day the utter sincerity  behind these songs is what makes them so irresistibly enjoyable.
