Moby - Destroyed

For an artist who has been making and releasing music for over two decades now – it’s always a challenging equation to stay relevant and interesting. This equation proves to be important when said artist has amassed critical acclaim and commercial success with previous releases.

Moby is one of those artists who have always strived to find the perfect balance between accessible and experimental. He has achieved an enormous amount of success with his releases during the 90’s and early 2000’s. Destroyed is Moby’s 10th album to date – wonder if it will live up to his standards? Then read triplew.me’s review...

Destroyed comes with an agenda, or more like a prototype. This is an album for melancholic insomniacs who prefer to watch the world while it sleeps. Everything on the album directs us to feel that way, from the linear notes to the album cover (photograph taken by Moby at LaGuardia airport) – but what about the music itself?

From the opening sounds of ‘The Broken Places’ until the closing loops of ‘When You Are Old’ – everything is packaged neatly to portray an image of isolation and introspection. The songs are mellow and lushly quiet - Creating a cohesive ambient elctronica sequence.

Some tracks are layered with repetitive lyrics and robotic vocals – ‘Be The One’ is a good example of that. The song starts out slow and hypnotic but as it picks up it becomes more appealing. The addition of vocals, however, doesn’t work on other tracks (case in point ‘The Low Hum’).

Nothing on Destroyed brims with originality, but what works for this album is the after-effect.

Moby will perform in Dubai on July 4th. Check out the event listing right here.

The tenth release from album boasts sounds of loneliness, insomnia and introspection - all in a serene electronic aesthetic. An album to listen to from start to finish.
