Neobyrd - Transbyrd

The ever dynamic electronic artist from Cairo has released his debut album. Would it top his fine work from last year's EP? Well, there is only one way to find out – listen and read triplew.me's review of Transbyrd below…

If Neobyrd was a superhero his power would be ‘change’ or ‘shapeshifting’. The musical styles on Transbyrd are a world different from what was on Naughty Boyz EP – not to review this album in the context of comparison, but it’s important to note such aspects, especially when they speak volumes for the artist’s ability to create and explore.

Transbyrd opens with 'Ooh Oh' – a nice little glitch-y track, which works perfectly as an opener or an intro – especially as it’s interlaced with some kind of lyrical intro. This is followed by 'Spill Your Sunshine' – an uber summery, chilled-out track with a cool retro feel (think a smooth 70’s disco vibe mixed with a bit of mysterious 80’s). This vibe is predominant throughout the album – which adds an element of consistency and elevates the sound.

But, in what seems to be typical Neobyrd fashion – Transbyrd does oscillate between sounds. It sounds a little bit out of context with the hip-hop infused track 'Stranger In Love'- which is fantastic – but does stand out amidst the mostly chilled-out disco-influenced laid-back album.

The last two tracks could also easily belong to another album – with their hard hitting dance-floor beats  - 'Lick My Tiesto' and 'Twisted' do stand out.

All in all, Transbyrd is another solid reminder of the massive electronica talent that is Neobyrd – even if the record isn’t entirely in ‘context’, it definitely is entirely good.

An astounding debut from Cairo-based electronica chameleon Neobyrd. Influences from yesteryear with a fresh and current twist. This is a collection of high quality tracks which will be a great addition to any regional music lover's library.

I reckon this one's worth a 4 star review. There's a congruity to this record that I don't think I've heard in similar releases this year - e.g. Cut/Copy. Neobyrd has about 3 x the ability to make a song and album than those guys, and this is something obviously early in a career. I've listened to it for about a month now, and I've gotta say, it's one of the best produced albums I've heard for a while.
