The Lebanese group Mahsrou3 Leila have released their new EP El Hal Romancy, a collection of six new songs brimming with life and which play as an extension to their signature sound with some new elements.
Read below for triplew.me’s review of El Hal Romancy.
Mashrou3 Leila came into prominence on the Lebanese underground music scene with their fantastic self-titled debut album which featured an inventive use of traditional Middle Eastern and Armenian music with rock music sensibilities.
El Hal Romancy continues along the same creative notes – but with more cohesive sound. Opening with “Al Moqaddima” (The Introduction); a two minute ‘wail’ of the sorts, showcasing the amazingly expressive vocals of vocalist Hamed Sinno over an epic and chill-inducing soundtrack.
The intro melds into the next song “Habibi”, an opulently grand track which starts out with some amazing drum and guitar work. The track goes on in so many different directions (from a gorgeous string section to the more intimate outro). This particular song speaks of Mahsrou3 Leila’s amazing ability at creating an other-worldly event with their amazing attention to detail in the composition of their tracks.
The musical styles on El Hal Romancy vary – From the acoustic guitar-driven ballads (“Inni Mneeh”) to the the significantly Balkan-ic influenced “Imm El Jacket” and the angrily energetic and rock-edged “Wajih”.
El Hal Romancy delves into a more personal lyrical territory than their previous offerings. After addressing political and societal issues on their debut album they take on different characters stories on the EP.
Mahrou3 Leila has successfully recreated the magic of their signature live style over these six tracks. This is a band that is definitely more comfortable than ever in their sound, and for that we are lucky.
