When Good Music Happens to Bad Movies

Angus (1995) - Yes, it is as bad as it looks

Rasha Omer, triplew.me's chief of all things new, takes a look back at some of the worst movies of all time, that somehow have been accompanied by the best soundtracks. Vampire lovers, please don't read on.

Let’s face it, generally, there are more mediocre-to-bad movies out there than good – which is a massive shame. But sometimes bad movies have a saving grace, some of them are utterly cheesy beyond repair which makes them funny, and some have outstanding soundtracks you wonder if they spent half the effort on writing decent lines than compiling music – then maybe the film wouldn’t have been so bad.

Anyway, here's our 5 worst movies/5 best soundtrack combinations - tell us any more you'd like to add below:

TWILIGHT ECLIPSE

This boggles the mind, is it some sort of grand scheme to get the love and support of hipsters from around the world? The soundtrack includes songs by Metric, The Black Keys, Vampire Weekend, Sia and Muse (who seem to be really into vampire romance- No surprise here, eh?). The movie, with all bias on my side, is a whole lot fluff and really bad acting.

VANILLA SKY

The film that signaled the beginning of the end for Tom Cruise. A performance so over the top backed by a seriously laughable plot with a side dish of trying too hard. The soundtrack on the other hand was actually good – featuring tracks by Sigur Ros, R.E.M, The Chemical Brothers and soundtrack darling Jeff Buckley – it was good, but not in the context of the movie.

ANGUS

A truly terrible film, with even worse writing, but its soundtrack was phenomenal – a 90’s roller coaster ride filled with punk pop and alternative gems from Green Day, Ash, Weezer and the Goo Goo Dolls. Really worth looking up!

MARIE ANTOINETTE

Sofia Coppola is a talented director, but she tried to do so much with this film – and in her search for bright colors and shocking styles she’s forewent quality – but rejoice! The soundtrack of this movie is truly brilliant. Two discs of 80’s gems and electronic goodness – this is a compilation not to be missed.

PURPLE RAIN

Not so much bad as more of what the heck was the point of the “movie”? The soundtrack or rather album, is nothing less than phenomenal and classic Prince – a track-listing of great songs that certainly didn’t need a movie or extended music video to be showcased.
