Inception

Some films are just far too clever (potentially for their own good) and need a second look to fully comprehend what it is you are actually watching....Inception is such a film.

In Chris Nolan’s 2006 film The Prestige, you hear Christian Bale say several times; “Are you watching closely”? Well with Inception you will need to do just that to follow the often puzzling plot line. DiCaprio portrays a “Dream Security” specialist who handles a team of expert “dreamers” attempting to influence a powerful businessman by altering his subconscious thoughts. Sounds simple enough right?

The team moves around together inside a dream, but that dream could actually be part of someone else’s. Or is it? This reviewer wasn’t entirely sure. But, now to the really complicated part; the team that are present inside this first dream are then put into another self induced secondary dream, and a third. The rabbit hole goes deeper and deeper. Following still? Before you can ask yourself “what the hell is going on here”, your head implodes due to total befuddlement. Oh, and if any of the crew are killed while dreaming, they wake up in the real world completely unscathed. But there is the problem; what exactly is the “real world”? I'm still scratching my head over that question.

Does this general concept sound faintly familiar? Yes, it would be easy to compare it to the first Matrix film, but Inception goes a few steps further towards paradoxical plotting. So much so that you would be forgiven for thinking that something very special happened at the writing desk....

On a positive note, the cast are superb with a standout performance from Joseph Gordon-Levitt. (Who could be labelled the new Heath Ledger).  The visual effects are original and hugely impressive, plus some gravity defying fight sequences that will leave your head fully tilted trying to figure out how they were filmed. In all, a watchable film, and one definitely to see twice.

A film too clever for it's own good?

That pretty much sums up our attitude towards this one, perhaps we got caught in the hype machine as well, but it seemed a bit of a let down with a confusing plot. We might need to see it again, as already we're arguing about this rating!
