If you're anything like us, the moment an assignment gets dropped on your desk to go and see a kids film, although secretly pleased, you probably shout out the disdain about another cheesy film about nothing in particular….
But, the thing is, these movies sometimes help you remember why most films are made – to entertain. And so we sit in a cinema with a bunch of kids eating Nacho’s (why do cinema’s server nacho’s? so strange – the most difficult things to eat in the dark) to watch Despicable Me….
Steve Carrel, with a curious pseudo-German accent, plays Gru, a super-villain who has lost his luster as the most villainous man on the planet, and who is struggling for his mantle back from the young upstart Vector (Jason Segel), who in the opening scene of the film, we discover has stolen the Pyramids of Giza.
From then on Gru, with his loveable small yellow Minions (that’s what they're actually called) go on a series of adventures to recover a piece of equipment that will help him steal the ultimate prize, the Moon. Enlisting the help, unknown to them, of three orphans, Gru goes about stealing the prize and seeking redemption.
There’s lots in this one for the adults too, the most notable of which comes with Gru entering the Bank of Evil for a loan, replete with a sign hanging above the door ‘formerly Lehman Brothers’. A film that’s as entertaining as it is bright, with some fantastic animation, Despicable Me is an entertaining change of pace, even with faux German accents (note well, Julie Andrews).

The animation and fantastic use of color to enhance the storyline, amazingly perfect for this film.
Aside from the Nacho’s, a feeling that the morals are pushed a little too hard and that a sequel is set up.
