Marjane Satrapi returns with another adaptation of one of her graphic novels – titled, Chicken with Plums. Read below for triplew.me’s review of the film…

Marjane Satrapi has enchanted the audience with her debut film Persepolis (2007). In Chicken with Plums, the director presents us with a most colorful of fairytales with the story of Nassir Ali, a heartbroken violinist living in Tehran in the 50’s of the last decade.

The story revolves around Ali’s final days on earth and his quest to find peace in death. This morbid context is uplifted by a charming and comical dialogue and dynamic performances from the cast.

The depressed violinist recalls his fondest memories from pivotal points in his life, and the movie takes us on a journey which is at times absurd but cheerfully youthful. Nasser Ali’s greatest loss in life was a past romance which never worked out. His love interest, Iran, was the biggest influence on his music and the reason of his downward spiral. This love story plays as a strong symbolic message from Satrapi about the bittersweet relationship which Iranian artists have with their country.

Chicken with Plums provides magic in its visuals, but a lack of complexity in the story proves to be the movie’s only downfall.
