El Gusto Still (Picture: ADFF).

Debut film from director Safinez Bousbia is a documentary about the power of music. Set between Algeria and France, El Gusto is a marvelous story of big talents. Read below for triplew.me’s review of the film…

Fifty years ago, the men in Safinez Bousbia film were all a part of a revolutionary style of music born in al Casbah and called the Chaabi music. This music was an amalgam of Andalusian and traditional forms of music. The popularity of the Chaabi music has reached its heights with the public in the 60s of the last century.

All the heroes in El Gusto are larger than life characters. These elderly men, though they have moved on with their lives, are still as passionate about music as they were fifty years ago.

With all the political turmoil that took place in Algeria, and led to the declaration of independence came a very disappointing event. A religious clash forced some of these men to move to France and adapt their lives and music to a new sound.

El Gusto, is an inspiring tale. El Gusto is a joyful tale. El Gusto is a documentary that depicts the incredible power of music - this power which transcends any age, race or religion.
