Scene from Best Intentions (Picture: ADFF).

Romanian film-makerAdrian Sitaru follows up his critically acclaimed debut film ‘Hooked’ with another ordinarily interesting tale of one man’s projected paranoia and endless obsessions. Read below for triplew.me’s review of the film…

We're first introduced to Alex in his apartment in Bucharest, a 30-something year old man who learns of his mother’s recent illness. In Best Intentions we follow Alex’s irrational and paranoid behavior pattern in his attempt to avoid the unspeakable worst possible scenario.

In his own way of dealing with the prospect of losing his mother, Alex’s agitation and doubts lead him to scramble all day to find something that is about to go wrong. He insists on changing the hospital, the doctor, the treatment.

The film never tells us the story from Alex’s perspective, rather focusing on the projection of his paranoia on everyone around him. This very smart move from Sitaru’s vision proves pivotal, as we watch the unraveling of the protagonist from everyone else’s eyes.

Sitaru succeeds in creating an air of anxiety to counter the slow pace of the film and the lack of actual resolutions.

This Romanian drama takes on an anxiety-filled journey with 30-year old Alex and his ill mother. The film explores the prospect of good motives gone haywire amplified by the smart directing of Adrian Sitaru.
