Bobby Fischer is, with no doubt, a genius chess player and probably one of the best to ever play the game. Liz Garbus examines the fascinating and tragic life of Fischer in Bobby Fischer Against the World. Read below for triplew.me’s review of the film…

Every genius seemingly has a downfall and every genius walks the thin line of sanity and insanity. Bobby Fischer, the Grandmaster of Chess and one the game’s most celebrated players is no different. In Bobby Fischer Against the World, we follow his road to success and subsequently his downward spiral.

From a very peculiar childhood, came Fischer’s obsession with the world of chess. Starting to play the game at the age of six – Bobby was a prodigy – beating some of the best players in the Unites States and winning the country’s championships eight times in a row.

The film takes us on a journey through his most pivotal game – the 1972 World Chess Championship against Boris Spassky. Bobby Fischer’s erratic behavior and ego were the talk of the game. Regardless of a long game of give and take, he managed to turn out victorious in one of the most celebrated times of his life.

Following his big win, Bobby Fischer’s erratic behavior, isolation and paranoia reached record heights - From joining cult-like churches to going astray socially. The man’s genius led to his ultimate destruction.

Bobby Fischer Against the World sheds the light into this highly interesting and elusive character journey from the top to the depths of despair.

A superb documentary dissecting the world of American chess genius Bobby Fischer. From a troubled and unstable childhood to an unwanted stardom. Complete with some brilliant photographs documenting his life, the filmmaker manages to stay true to a legendary but tragic story.
