Michel Piccolo in Habemus Papam (Picture: ADFF).

Italian filmmaker Nanni Moretti’s latest film is comedy-drama filled with controversy but carrying a universal message. Read below for triplew.me’s review of the film…

Habemus Papam (or We Have a Pope) takes place in Rome following the death of the Pope. The conclave meets to make a decision on who should be the new patriarch of the Holy See. Their seemingly misfortunate (in this case) pick falls on Cardinal Melville.

And the story begins! Cradinal Melville (or the new Pope) has no desire in taking this duty, so he avoids the big announcement in front of the sea of the awaiting ‘faithful’. The Pope’s spokesperson decides to hire a psychoanalyst to help him get back on the right track.

The film then takes the audience on two parallel journeys; the first one of the new Pope who is on a path to find what he wants out of life – now that this daunting responsibility has dawned upon him. And the second is of everyone else waiting for his return.

Nanni Moretti intelligently blends irony, humor, tension, drama and humanity in this somewhat controversial cinematic portrayal of the Pope and the Catholic Church. The film is carried by a fantastic, sullen performance from Michel Piccolo.
