George Clooney proves to be a triple-threat (maybe even more – which makes us wonder why he didn’t succeed in playing a superhero?) with his latest film The Ides of March, read below for triplew.me’s review...
Directed, co-written and co-produced by Clooney (who also stars in the film), The Ides of March is a tightly plotted political drama/thriller which takes us behind the scenes of a heated presidential campaign. Clooney plays the role of the presidential hopeful, Mike Morris, whose ideals and principles invoke much of the reality of the political climate in the United States today.
Through a complicated web of deceit, hypocrisy, lies, games and disappointments, The Ides of March starts out slow but full of strength and a hope (in a perfectly synched scenario to match the ups and downs of the current American government) and in a quick, efficient and paranoid cascade the plot moves in an upward thrilling trajectory. The film doesn’t reveal anything new about the murky world of politics, yet it provides a close-up dissection of the blurred lines of good and bad in the political arena.
The film’s intricate writing is projected on the big screen by a wonderful cast – Philip Seymour Hoffman (in the role of Paul - the cool, calm and collected senior campaign manager), Ryan Gosling (in the role Stephen, the ambitious and dedicated junior campaign manager) and Paul Giamatti (in the role of Tom, the calculating and jaded rival campaign manager). The cast also includes other well-known actors, which is usually a recipe for mediocrity in star-studded films, but in The Ides of March it all works out perfectly – thanks to the insightful eye of director George Clooney.
The Ides of March is probably one of the year’s best Hollywood releases. A relentlessly smooth thriller, which doesn’t rely on explosive ‘truths’ for shock value but rather takes a discerning look at the extent, reality and price of these so called 'truths'.
