It's as if the complexities, clichés and characters of all cop films have been laid-out and explained to us in one easy hit in this buddy-cop-spoof. Surprisingly, successfully.
Tough-cop Terry Hoitz (played by Mark Wahlberg), does a great job of illustrating stereotypical cop characters via his almost excessively-graphic analogies from his hero days. Matched with his partner, the mysteriously alluring Allen Gamble, played by Will Ferrell, (who, we learn also takes the moniker of ‘pimp Gator’) helps us to identify the various stereotypical cop complexes that come with these characters.
These two funny-men are the jokes of their precinct; and no one is going to let them forget it. They spoof several types of bullies throughout the film, so here’s a brief rundown. There's the 'hot shot' LA cops, causing our boys trouble all over and what better men for the job than Samuel L. Jackson and The Rock (Dwayne Johnson). Then there's the 'wannabe–cop' types, you know the stereotype - like Miami Vice but without style or purpose, which Jimmy fits perfectly (played Bobby Cannavale). To round out an all-star cast, Steve Coogan plays the role of not-so menacing villain and it comes with an Aussie babysitter! It's hilarious and provides some of the best parts of the film. Really!
The majority of this film takes place in Ferrell’s Prius. If that doesn’t crack you up/intrigue you/make you want to see Mark Wahlberg in a Prius right now – then don’t bother seeing this film.
And before you get turned off this film because Will Ferrell is in it, he really knows how to compliment Wahlberg's 'straight' guy. He also makes us sympathetic to the emotional strain of being a Pimp (!) as he reminisces about his shady alias, Gator, and how he met and married the bodacious, but untalented, Eva Mendes.
Be prepared for over the top graphic humour, references to nature and a re-run of all the major cop movies/series, but in a fun way.
And remember that “Gator's b*tches best be wearin' jimmy's.”

The hilarious storyline, visual gags, and Steve Coogan's role as the 'villian'.
If a funny, no-brainer cop spoof isn't your thing. It's done so much better than most though.
