Rockumentary about three very different guitarists in one room, but is it big enough for the egos?
The promise is one of the most exciting music DVD's in a long time - The Edge (U2), Jack White (The White Stripes, The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather) and Jimmy Page (do we need to say it? Ok, Led Zeppelin) in one room, talking about guitars and their attitude towards music. The title even got us at triplew.me Towers excited beyond belief.
And maybe that's why I was let down (that and the 10-minute Whole Lotta Love jam I was expecting didn't happen).
From Jack White's recollections of his childhood obsession with music, through to The Edge's recollections of how bad the music in Ireland as U2 were starting out was (producing the quote of the film "Spinal Tap – that's a movie that I watched. I didn't laugh, I wept…it was so close to the truth"), to Jimmy Page's recollections of his early days as a session musician through to the Zeppelin sessions in mansions in rural England, it's a revealing documentary. And while it's all interesting, bordering on fascinating , it still left me wanting more. It is, at the end of the day, a story of musical rebellion at different times and one that tells that story well, with some genius' thrown in!
When they get together, too infrequently, in a empty soundstage it suddenly clicks. Magic happens, the jams flow freely and guitar talk comes thick and fast, it makes for great music-making viewing. Although the best section - a performance of the The Band's The Weight - is ruined by the final credits.
It might get loud. It doesn't really. Ever. But it's still a fine watch.

Seeing the master Jimmy Page show them how it's done (not to mention his pirate shirts!).
Reflecting how much money U2 probably made with 1.5 notes and a lot of effects on 'Elevation' and why you didn't think of doing that before...
What do you think?
