Ozwald Boateng - A Man's Story

The story of British menswear designer and Saville Row tailor Ozwald Boateng, is one that was filmed over 12 years (!) and is a superbly pieced together biographical documentary.

Director Varon Bonicos’ first film is an amazing tale, meticulously edited after being put together using 12 years of footage of one of the biggest names in men’s fashion, Ozwald Boateng.

Charting Boateng’s rise from the late 90’s to the documentary’s conclusion at the closing of London Fashion Week in September of 2010, this is an essentially biographical look at a most intriguing figure in the often superficial world of high fashion.

Bonicos’ unique access to the man allows us to witness the professional, and sometimes deeply personal, peaks and troughs of a star on the rise. A Man’s Story is a revealing, candid and a unique glimpse into the life of a man who has survived on self-belief (and, at times, little else) to become a pre-eminent leader in men’s fashion and tailoring, as well as championing charitable causes.

Although this reviewer cannot recall a similar precedent of a documentary following a subject for such a long time, one could easily imagine the difficulty of the editing suite on this documentary. It is not as self-indulgent as it could well have been, and is cut amazingly with a soundtrack befitting the subject of the documentary.

A thoroughly enjoyable documentary that will no doubt do well world-over. It has everything, and leaves nothing wanting, superb.

Ozwald Boateng has been the pre-eminent men's tailor for the past decade, rising to fame under both his eponymous brand and designing for Givenchy. This documentary trails Ozwald for 12 years as his professional and personal life goes through highs and lows. A tale of a man with extraordinary self-belief, this documentary is a great piece of film-making that should appeal to a wide audience. Brilliantly edited and cut, this is a great story.
