They're back - this time with sensible sweaters - DeNiro & Stiller

No, this isn't someone from Newcastle (England) cursing, but Stiller & DeNiro returning in the latest episode in the ‘Meet The Parents’ franchise – with expected, but mixed, results. Read triplew.me’s review of Little Fockers, and leave your own comments.

Ben Stiller’s original film ‘Meet The Parents’ was a smash hit and had a wide appeal – playing in the ‘in-law’ genre as well as any before it. The mix of Robert DeNiro and Ben Stiller had the chemistry to deliver the main storyline, and gags that went along with it. In the sequel, ‘Meet The Fockers’ we were introduced to the eccentric parents of Stiller’s character Greg, well played by Barbara Streisand and Dustin Hoffman.

In the third and latest film, the story tackles the age-old question of parents (or in-laws) interfering in cases of perceived infidelity, child-raising and the continued age-old problem that we all have – the father-in-law is actually a retired CIA agent.

There’s plenty to enjoy in this one if you're into the first two – the DeNiro/Stiller gags are still there, the physical gags/slapstick, the toilet humour and this time around, a healthy dose of bedroom humour. One particularly cringe-worthy but watchable scene has Stiller helping DeNiro out with, let’s say, an over-stimulation side-effect of some, well, male-oriented stimulation tablets.

Owen Wilson reprises his role from earlier movies with great aplomb and manages to steal several scenes he's in - giving you an idea of the depth of the film.

It won't win any Oscars, but then it's not supposed to. This is a film that does exactly what it says on the tin – it’s another, albeit slightly slower, installment of the Meet The Parents and does the overall genre well. You’ll probably be entertained and that’s what seeing a movie like this is all about.

We've set ourselves a difficult yardstick this year in terms of rankings (and one we're reviewing) so this only gets 2 stars. If we had half marks it would be 2.5. A range of excellent cameos, entertaining scenes and general light-heartedness make this a watchable, if but a little dull, film. While it's not on a par with a lot of what we've reviewed, it still does the trick for a lazy Friday afternoon at the cinema.
