True Grit - the Joel & Ethan Coen remake of the 1969 classic starring the legendary John Wayne. Read triplew.me's review of the film here...
True Grit… this is destined to be TripW’s most bias review to date and possibly for sometime to come. I love Westerns; I dig Bridges beyond most other actors and have a soft spot for the Coen Bros style of directing. “So, sorry Ed.” True Grit, one word review… “awesome!” “Is that enough?” Might throw in, “for best results, definitely go see on big screen.”
More?
We all loved ‘The Dude’ (The Big Lebowski) and Bad Blake (Crazy Heart) broke our hearts. In this incarnation, Bridge’s Rooster Cogburn is sublime; almost an amalgamation of the two. A renegade US Marshall, who dosses in a Chinese chicken coupe, can’t roll his own smokes and is seemingly, as fond of shooting unarmed people, as he is of cussing.
Is Bridges becoming typecast? Cranky, old, down on his luck, boozehound. Maybe he is; but it’s not like he’s not able to pull it off with aplomb. Other performances were equally good. No beef with Damon’s LaBoeuf, solid as a hunk of chuck steak. Hailee Steinfeld (a newcomer no less) was accomplished in every detail, and her character’s charm and effortless wit assisted the plot very effectively.
Star of the show? Well, there were a couple. Screenplay, script and dialogue between characters wins out and out. Cinematography? Winter on the plains never looked so idyllic. And Lucky Ned’s (Barry Pepper) teeth. Trust me, they don’t hand out too many sets of veneers like them at the Hollywood Brite Smile Clinic.
Look, if westerns rub you up the wrong way, then steer clear, like the proverbial Smallpox tent. But, if you appreciate epic dialogue, engaging characters and stunning backdrops go-see. Didn’t win a single Oscar. Here’s the three is should have hauled: Supporting Actress, Hailee Steinfeld; Directing, Joel and Ethan Coen and Best Picture.
