Unkown - starring Liam Neeson and January Jones

Read our review of the feature film 'Unknown', which we find to be lacking and perhaps worthy of its title. Read triplew.me's review of the film here...

If you could have the worst week possible then the plot if this film might just fit the bill. Dr. Martin Harris (Liam Neesen) arrives in Berlin with his wife Liz (January Jones) to attend a biotechnology summit. Realizing he has left his briefcase at the airport he rushes back in a taxi driven by Diane Kruger’s character Gina.

En-route to the airport they are involved in a car accident which sees the taxi driving of a bridge into a river with Harris knocked unconscious. Gina rescues him from drowning before disappearing from the scene.

Four days later Harris comes out of a coma. Frantic that his wife does not know where he is, he returns to their hotel only to discover another man (played by Aidan Quinn) has taken over his identity with his wife claiming she does not know him.

There begins the psychological thriller as Liam Neesen’s character struggles with his predicament and sets out to reveal the truth and get his wife, and life, back. The odds are stacked against him though as he is the target of assassins, for reasons beyond him.

The cast, including Bruno Ganz as the private investigator enlisted by Neesen, give strong performances, arguably rescuing what is a far-fetched plot. Despite this, the film manages to tie up neatly at the end, keeping the audience guessing and in an equally bewildered state throughout the film.

This film is for lovers of Hitchcock's style (without the flair or well-constructed stories) which if you look past the rather implausible sequence of events ultimately gives you some bang for your buck.

Unknown is a film that's in every sense a middle of the road psychological thriller. Having a storyline similar to any of the genre of the last few years, exploring identity theft and the subsequent quest to get it back and prove everyone wrong, it's thriller-by-numbers. But this genre does it better than others, and if you like that type of thing, you'll probably walk away content with this one.
