The sequel to the wildly successful and wildly entertaining The Hangover (2009) is aptly titled Hangover 2. Read below for triplew.me’s review of the film…
Hollywood loves sequels - Especially, sequels of films which originally made a big impact in the box office. The Hangover (original) was a formulaic comedy which worked on all the right levels thanks to a stellar cast and a strong script.
So, how did the sequel fare?
The film is based around the same group of friends; Phil, Stu and Alan (Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis) – following them on their adventures of misfortune and incessant bad luck around Bangkok (as opposed to Las Vegas, from the original).
The story goes as follows (no spoilers included!): Phil is getting married in Thailand and he invites his group of seriously unlucky friends to the ceremony, and that’s when all the bad things start to happen. The plot is very similar to the original film, with the exception of minor details (supporting cast, locations…etc), but all-in-all it’s the exact same sequence of a bad trip where no one knows what has happened the night before and what consequences they have to pay for their forgotten debaucheries.
Where The Hangover was a quick, hard-punching and a brilliant comedy – The Hangover 2 falls (really) short of expectations. The dialogue is forced in most places, the comic timing is off and the general atmosphere is that of a film trying to ride coattails of a previous success (through the use of recycled jokes and unrealistic situations).
Mr. Chao’s (Ken Jeong) extended appearance in the sequel (and regardless of his neurotic and mostly over the top antics) is probably the film’s strongest point. That being said, the film will probably be a hit backed by its predecessor’s success. Which makes me wonder; would someone who’s never seen The Hangover (Las Vegas) find The Hangover 2 to be a top notch comedy?
