Ryan Reynlods in a scene of The Green Lantern

In what seems to be a summer of superhero movies and comic-book big-screen adaptations – another film is added to that roster, The Green Lantern. Read below to discover if the movie is a hit or a miss according to us here in at triplew.me…

The film follows the story of Hal Jordan – a reckless, adventurous and irresponsible test pilot with a tragic backstory which inspires most of his Green Lantern story.

So what’s a Green Lantern? Basically, without divulging into too many spoiler-ific details – it’s a title given to a special kind of ‘entities’ with special and superb mental and physical powers. The story of the film (or the comic) takes us on Hal Jordan’s discovery and corrective path to becoming a Lantern.

What’s the key in becoming one of those great and indestructible Lanterns? Combating your inner fear. Yes, this film is filled with cheesy lines – but that’s not the bad part. I mean, we didn’t exactly go into a comic book adaptation looking for depth. That being said, the film did have a lot of other issues.

If you are after a barrage of flashy effects and bright images (courtesy of the ever trendy 3D glasses), then you’ll probably enjoy this flick. It’s light, it’s downright silly – but the problem is, it didn’t even deliver in those aspects. Ryan Reynlods as a comic book hero isn’t a typical choice – and he doesn’t do a convincing job to be honest. The rest of the cast is forgettable, to say the least.

The film has all the usual elements: There is the ever present battle of good and evil. There is a romantic storyline. The good guy does win. It just doesn’t help the film that we didn’t get to see him actually suffer or work for it.

The writers tried to position this film a light comedy with some cool special effects – but, it probably would’ve been better to script it as a grittier, darker and tougher film. The concept of green people with super mind powers who live in outer space is funny enough, so by emphasizing on the ‘silly’ the film didn’t measure up. Especially with so many other comic book adaptations which are done just right and staying true to the original story.

The film that tried to do too little. Based on a comic book and boasting some impressive special effects, The Green Lantern fell short of making any impact with its weak writing and miscasting.
